Csíkszeredai Régizene Fesztivál

Visual identity & graphic design for Miercurea Ciuc Early Music Festival

The first Early Music Festival was organised in 1980 in Miercurea, making it the oldest early music festival in Romania.

It is no coincidence that Csíkszereda embraced the early music decades ago, since in the 17th century, such a culture-forming and influential figure as Joannes Kájoni (1629/30-1687) lived and worked in the monastic order of Csíksomlyó, which belonged to the city. Early music is interpreted by the organisers as music from bygone eras - the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque - performed on period instruments or authentic copies of period instruments in the style of period performance.

The Miercurea Ciuc Early Music Festival has been awarded the EFFE Best European Festivals rating and has been a member of the European Network of Early Music Festivals (REMA) since 2008.

In addition to the trilingualism, the international character of the festival made the creative challenge more difficult. After mapping the potential audience/consumers (a narrow group due to the nature of the festival), the direction of the idea that the design could best reflect the festival as a monogram-like logo became clear.

As with the music of the period in question, we have sought to create harmony in form, bearing in mind the vicissitudes and parallels of the time. This is how the monogram of the form below was born, combining the stylized form of the E M F (Early Music Festival) with a spatial notation that evokes the interpretation of the music.
